Maintaining Jet A-1 Quality Under Continuous Transfer

Maintaining the quality of Jet A-1 aviation fuel throughout storage and transfer is essential to safe, reliable terminal operations. During pumping, storage and product transfer, fuel can be exposed to solid contaminants and free water that reduce fuel quality and threaten the reliability of downstream equipment. An effective filtration system is central to minimising these risks while supporting continuous operation under demanding service conditions.

For this project, ERGIL designed and manufactured a complete Jet A-1 fuel filtration package for an oil terminal handling aviation fuel. Engineered with a design flow capacity of 400 m³/h, the package supports continuous fuel-transfer operations while maintaining the required fuel cleanliness. ERGIL’s scope covered engineering, fabrication, assembly, inspection and factory testing of the complete package.

Key Design Specifications

Parameter Specification
Application Jet A-1 fuel transfer
Design flow 400 m³/h
Operating pressure 10 barg
Design pressure 16 barg
Operating temperature −20 °C to +50 °C
Pressure-vessel design code ASME Section VIII Division 1
Vessel material SA516 Grade 70 carbon steel
Internal protection Jet A-1 compatible internal coating

Package Configuration

The package comprises two dedicated pressure vessels performing complementary filtration duties. Together they remove suspended solid contaminants, separate free water and retain fine particulate during fuel transfer.

Vessel Duty Element complement
Jet A-1 Filter/Separator Fine-solids removal + free-water separation 20 coalescer cartridges + 8 separator cartridges
Jet A-1 Micro Filter High-efficiency fine-particulate retention 11 micro-filter cartridges
Aviation fuel filter separator internal tube-sheet with coalescer and separator element ports

Internal tube-sheet arrangement — coalescer element ports (left) and separator ports (right). Element location and sealing directly determine separation performance.

Engineering, Fabrication & Quality

The package was engineered for reliable long-term service under terminal operating conditions. All internal surfaces in contact with Jet A-1 fuel were protected with a fuel-compatible coating to preserve fuel quality, while external surfaces were abrasive-blasted and finished with an industrial protective coating system for corrosion resistance during outdoor service.

Instrumentation & operability

To support safe operation and routine maintenance, the package was equipped with differential-pressure indicators, pressure gauges, automatic air-elimination devices and pressure-protection accessories. These allow operators to monitor filter condition, plan cartridge replacement and maintain stable performance across the service life of the equipment.

Manufacturing & inspection

Manufacturing was carried out in accordance with ERGIL’s quality-management procedures and the project specification:

  • Material traceability maintained throughout production.

  • Welding performed using qualified procedures.

  • Dimensional inspection and non-destructive examination (NDE) of each pressure vessel.

  • Hydrostatic pressure testing prior to final acceptance.

  • Compliance verification against the project requirements before shipment.

Why it matters

The result is an integrated filtration package that maintains Jet A-1 cleanliness at 400 m³/h — protecting downstream equipment, preserving fuel quality and supporting reliable, continuous terminal operations.
