BIOFILTRATION SYSTEM

Biological Odor and VOC Removal from Air

Ergil designs biofiltration systems that clean odorous and VOC-laden air with a bed of living microorganisms. Humid air passes through an organic or engineered media, where bacteria convert hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, mercaptans and many volatile organics into harmless compounds. The process runs at ambient temperature with low energy and almost no chemicals. It is a proven, economical answer for large, low-concentration air streams.

Biofiltration Principle

Contaminants dissolve into a thin water film on the media. Microorganisms attached to the media consume them. Products: CO₂, water, sulfate, nitrate and biomass.

System Components

Inlet duct and fan, humidifier or pre-scrubber, air distribution plenum, filter bed, irrigation system, leachate drain, stack or distributed outlet, instruments.

Filter Media

Wood chips, bark, compost, peat, coconut fiber or engineered inorganic media. Selected for porosity, moisture retention, nutrients and service life.

Empty Bed Residence Time

Typically 15 to 60 seconds. Longer time for hard-to-degrade compounds. Bed area and depth follow from airflow and residence time.

Humidity and Moisture

Inlet air humidified to above 95% relative humidity. Spray irrigation keeps media moist without flooding.

Operating Window

Bed temperature about 15–40 °C. Neutral to slightly acidic pH. Heating or cooling of inlet air for extreme climates.

Removal Efficiency

Odor and H₂S removal commonly above 95%. VOC removal depends on biodegradability and loading. Verified by olfactometry or gas analysis.

Containment Options

Open-bed concrete, closed steel or FRP vessels, or modular containers. Covered designs for cold or rainy sites. Stacked beds for small footprints.

Pretreatment

Dust, grease and water droplets removed upstream. Chemical scrubber for high H₂S peaks to protect the bed.

Applications

Wastewater plants, pumping stations, sludge handling, composting, food and rendering plants, landfills, pulp and paper, refineries and chemical sites.

Operation and Maintenance

Low energy use. No hazardous chemicals. Media renewed every few years. Simple monitoring of pressure drop, moisture and outlet odor.

Construction Standards

Steel, FRP or concrete structures, corrosion-resistant coatings, fans and instruments for corrosive air, documentation pack.

Ergil biofiltration systems deliver stable odor control at low operating cost, with robust performance across seasons and flow changes.

Engineered

All products are engineered according to industry requirements.
