QUENCHER SCRUBBER

Rapid Gas Cooling and First-Stage Pollutant Removal

Ergil manufactures quencher scrubbers that cool hot process gas to saturation with direct liquid spray and remove part of the acid gases and particles in the same step. Hot gas enters the quench section and meets fine spray. Temperature drops within a fraction of a second. The cooled, saturated gas then enters packed scrubbers, absorbers or venturis, which operate best at low temperature.

Quench Principle

Direct contact between hot gas and liquid. Water evaporates and absorbs heat. Gas leaves at adiabatic saturation temperature, usually well below 100 °C.

Inlet Gas Temperature

Handles gas from several hundred degrees Celsius, as found in incinerator, thermal oxidizer, furnace and boiler exhaust. Hot inlet section built in alloy or refractory lined steel.

Spray System

Full-cone or hollow-cone nozzles on stainless or alloy headers. Non-clogging nozzle options for dirty liquor. Spray density set by gas temperature and flow.

Wet-Dry Interface

Special inlet design keeps solids from building up where hot dry gas meets liquid. Flooded elbow or wetted wall protects the inlet.

Pollutant Removal

Absorbs part of HCl, HF and SO₂ and washes out coarse dust and salts. Protects downstream scrubber packing and fiberglass equipment from heat.

Liquid Circulation

Recirculation pump, sump, bleed and make-up. Caustic dosing for pH control when acid gases are present. Heat exchanger option for cooled recirculation.

Mist Elimination

Separator or chevron stage prevents carryover to the next unit. Drain connection returns liquid to the sump.

Materials

Alloy 625, Hastelloy, duplex or 316L for the hot, acidic zone. FRP, PP or PVDF lined sections for cooled gas. Material chosen for temperature and chloride level.

Applications

Hazardous and medical waste incinerators, thermal oxidizers, sulfur recovery tail gas, flue gas desulfurization, chemical reactors, metal smelting and furnace exhaust.

Safety and Protection

Backup quench water supply or emergency water tank. Temperature interlocks, low flow trips and drain-down protection of materials.

Construction Standards

Pressure vessel design to ASME or EN codes, welding and NDE records, hydrotest, FAT and full documentation.

Ergil quencher scrubbers protect downstream equipment from heat, simplify gas cleaning trains and start pollutant removal at the stack inlet.
