SOUR WATER TREATMENT PACKAGE

H2S and Ammonia Removal from Process Condensate

Ergil designs and manufactures sour water treatment packages that remove hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and other dissolved gases from refinery, petrochemical and gas plant condensate. The skid combines degassing, oil separation, stripping and heat recovery in one factory-assembled unit. Stripped water returns to the process or meets discharge limits, and the acid gas leaves for sulfur recovery.

Sour Water Sources

Condensate from hydrotreaters, hydrocrackers, FCC and coker overheads, plus gas plant knockout drums. Typical contaminants: H2S, NH3, CO2, phenols, traces of oil.

Package Scope

Feed degassing drum, oil skimming, feed tank, feed pumps, feed–bottoms exchanger, stripper column, reboiler, overhead condenser, reflux drum, stripped water cooler. All on skid frames with piping and instruments.

Stripping Process

Steam strips H2S and NH3 from heated feed in a trayed or packed column. Acid gas leaves overhead. Clean water leaves from the bottom.

Single-Stage and Two-Stage Options

Single stage sends combined H2S/NH3 gas to the sulfur recovery unit. Two-stage separates the streams and recovers ammonia. Choice depends on downstream sulfur and ammonia handling.

Heat Recovery

Feed–bottoms exchanger preheats incoming water with hot stripped water. Lower reboiler duty. Lower steam use.

Operating Conditions

Low overhead pressure, typically below 2 barg. Bottom temperature follows steam pressure. Stripped water targets: H2S below 1 mg/L, NH3 in the 10–50 mg/L range, set by configuration.

Material Selection

Carbon steel with corrosion allowance for general sections. Stainless steel or duplex where ammonium bisulfide and chlorides attack. Material fit to feed analysis.

Corrosion and Fouling Control

Upstream degassing and oil removal protect trays and exchangers. Sampling points and cleaning access on key equipment.

Instrumentation and Control

Feed flow, reboiler steam, column temperature profile and bottoms quality control. Level and pressure interlocks. Local panel or DCS integration.

Applications

Refineries, petrochemical plants, gas processing, coal gasification and gas-to-liquids. Replacement or capacity addition for existing strippers.

Performance Benefits

Water reuse as wash or cooling make-up. Lower fresh water demand. Lower wastewater load. Shorter site installation than field-built units.

Construction Standards

ASME Section VIII design, welding and NDE per code, hydrotest, FAT, full documentation. Optional PED/ATEX per project.

Ergil sour water treatment packages give refineries and gas plants a compact way to meet reuse and discharge limits, with reliable stripping performance on variable feeds.
