REFLUX CONDENSER ACCUMULATOR

Overhead Liquid Collection for Fractionation Columns

ERGIL manufactures reflux condenser accumulators that collect condensed vapors from distillation column overhead condensers providing liquid inventory for reflux control and product takeoff. These horizontal drums enable stable fractionation through surge capacity and independent flow management.

Accumulator Function

Condensed overhead vapors flow to accumulator separating residual vapor, providing liquid surge volume, and enabling level-controlled split between reflux returned to column and net overhead product. Proper surge capacity buffers condenser performance variations and flow disturbances maintaining stable column operation and consistent product quality.

Vessel Design

Horizontal drum with vapor inlet from condenser, mist eliminator removing droplets, liquid space providing 10-20 minutes residence time at design flow, reflux outlet to column top tray, product outlet to downstream processing, and vent connection for non-condensables. ERGIL sizes vessels based on overhead vapor rate and control requirements.

Operating Conditions

Design pressure matches column overhead plus safety margin typically 5-150 psig. Temperature accommodates condensed liquid 30-100°C depending on column operation. Vapor space prevents liquid carryover during level variations. Materials suitable for condensed product including hydrocarbons, water, or chemicals.

Material Selection

Carbon steel construction for hydrocarbon fractionation. Stainless steel for corrosive condensates containing acids, water, or reactive compounds. Materials resist condensation corrosion. Design per ASME Section VIII with appropriate corrosion allowances.

Applications

Crude and vacuum distillation overhead accumulation, naphtha and gasoline stabilizer drums, gas plant NGL fractionation reflux vessels, chemical distillation liquid collection, and any separation requiring overhead liquid management. Serves refineries, gas plants, and chemical facilities.

Control Strategy

Level control adjusts reflux valve maintaining column internal reflux ratio. Independent product flow control manages net overhead takeoff. Cascade control with column pressure optimizes operation. Reflux ratio adjustment provides primary separation control meeting product specifications.

Integration

Pressure control on accumulator vapor space maintains column overhead pressure. Temperature monitoring verifies proper condensation. High-level alarm prevents column flooding. Low-level protection stops reflux pump preventing gas entrainment. DCS integration coordinates column controls.

Performance Benefits

Essential surge capacity enables stable distillation. Independent reflux and product control optimizes separation. Simple horizontal vessel with proven reliability. Accommodates condenser performance variations. Minimal maintenance with durable construction.

Construction Standards

Design per ASME Section VIII with materials suitable for service. Relief valve protection against blocked outlets. Nozzle sizing for proper vapor-liquid separation. Complete documentation with surge calculations and material specifications.

ERGIL reflux condenser accumulators deliver reliable liquid collection ensuring stable fractionation control and optimal separation in distillation operations.
