DEOILING HYDROCYCLONE PACKAGE

Compact Oil Removal from Produced Water

Ergil builds deoiling hydrocyclone packages that remove dispersed oil from produced water using centrifugal force. Water enters tangentially into small cyclone liners. The spin pushes lighter oil droplets to the core, where they leave as a small reject stream. Cleaned water exits at the other end. The package has no moving parts, takes little space and works at process pressure, which makes it a standard choice for offshore and onshore oil production.

Hydrocyclone Principle

Centrifugal acceleration far above gravity separates oil from water by density difference. Oil collects in the core and flows out the reject outlet. Water leaves through the underflow.

Package Scope

Hydrocyclone vessel with multiple liners, inlet and outlet manifolds, reject line with control valve, pressure and flow instruments, skid frame and piping. Optional feed pump and reject tank.

Liner Configuration

Many liners operate in parallel inside one pressure vessel. Liner count set by flow. Spare capacity allows turndown and future expansion.

Performance

Inlet oil in water of several hundred to a few thousand mg/L is reduced to typically 10–40 mg/L. Efficiency depends on droplet size, oil density and temperature. Effective for droplets larger than about 10–15 microns.

Pressure Drop Ratio Control

Reject flow follows the pressure drop ratio: inlet-to-reject pressure drop divided by inlet-to-water-outlet pressure drop, usually held between 1.5 and 2. Typical reject flow is 1–3% of inlet flow. Control valve keeps the ratio steady as flow changes.

Operating Conditions

Minimum differential pressure across the liners, commonly 2–3 bar. Works under pressure, so no extra pumping stage is needed when the inlet pressure is available.

Process Position

Placed after the production separator and before degassers, flotation or filtration. Reject oil returns to the slop or closed drain system.

Materials

Duplex stainless steel or super duplex liners for produced water with chlorides. Carbon steel vessels with lining or high-alloy options for sour and high-temperature service.

Solids Handling

Liners tolerate fine sand in moderate amounts. Upstream desanding hydrocyclone or filter protects the package in high solids service.

Applications

Offshore platforms, FPSOs, onshore oil production, gas plants with condensate water, steam-assisted production and refinery wastewater.

Offshore Suitability

Vessel motion has no effect on performance. Small footprint and low weight. Modular layout for deck mounting.

Construction Standards

ASME Section VIII, NACE MR0175 for sour service, hydrotest, FAT and full documentation pack. Skid design to project specifications.

Ergil deoiling hydrocyclone packages help operators meet produced water discharge and reinjection limits with small footprint and low maintenance.
